by Frank Barnett

Office noise is a rather delicate subject which can lead to problems in the workplace. If you are the type of person who needs absolute quiet in order to concentrate on the work at hand, a loud coworker can make your life miserable.

Here are 10 ways to deal with noisy coworkers. Not all will work, but there should be an option that will satisfy everybody's need for a peaceful work environment. The main point is, something must be done or the problem could escalate to bigger issues.

The first thing you can try to do is to discus the office noise problem with the chief offenders. Sometimes this is all that it takes as they may not realize the how disruptive they are being. If all else fails, have a frank discussion with their manager. Generally they can effectively deal with the situation.

If those tactics aren't successful, you might want to consult the Human Resources department. It's in everyone's best interest for the employees in an office to get along as well as they can, and HR is a great resource to help facilitate this. They can offer useful suggestions, or even counseling if necessary.

The simple method of shutting your office door is a fourth option for minimizing having to deal with office noise. Of course, this is not a possibility for you if you spend your days working in a cubicle, but you can still encourage others to give you some room. If they don't listen, then you should go for the fifth option, which means sending out an email to the appropriate supervisors outlining your position in the matter.

A convenient alternative to email would be sending a memo. This memo needs to be sent to the offender, the supervisor, or could be posted anonymously in a public area where most employees would see it. Some individuals need to be confronted in a loud and direct manner before they will pay attention to your words.

There are a couple of other ways to deal with noisy coworkers. This involves changing the office configuration so that the noise makers are moved further away from you or that your space is moved to a quieter location. While you might not be able to succeed in doing this, it surely will bring the noise problem to the attention of those in a position to do something about it.

There is yet a ninth way to minimize the disturbing effects of noisy coworkers. If you mask sound by using a white noise machine ,you might find yourself less distracted by the commotion and chatter of others, and more able to concentrate on your own work.

The tenth idea is to begin politely addressing the issue with other coworkers. There's always the possibility that others have been bothered by excessive office noise as well and were hesitant to say anything. If it turns out to be an issue for lots of people, then surely they will want to resolve it. You might bring in some coffee and donuts and have a friendly meeting with everyone to come up with some solutions.

When you work in a noisy environment and you also have a coworker who is loud and annoying, you probably often find your life to be a nightmare. Excessive office noise can make it that much harder to meet the requirements of doing your job well. The following 10 suggestions are ways to address the problem of noisy coworkers. We aren't promising that all of them will be effective, but there should be at least one option that will provide for a workplace that is quiet enough for everyone to concentrate on their work.
